Great Afro-American Music Vs "The Birth of a Nation"

"The Birth of a Nation" is more than a century old now. This influential film chronicles the relationship of two families in the American Civil War and Reconstruction era over the course of several years: the pro-Union Northern Stonemans and the pro-Confederacy Southern Camerons.

In collaboration with Cinema Nova

The Birth Of a Nation depicts the Ku Klux Klan as an heroic force and the black population as unintelligent and sexually aggressive towards white women. Its racist echoes may still be heard in today's America and in today's world.

Guillaume Maupin (musician and curator at Cinema Nova) and Sebastien Demeffe (Musician, director and curator at Cercle du Laveu) come up with a new playlist as soundtrack, played live on vinyl during the screening, through field recordings, blues, early piano jazz, traditional african music, popular songs from the US civil war, and recent American music. Hereby they provide a contemporary, critical approach to this impressive but problematic masterpiece. It's an occasion to illustrate and underdraw a formal historical cinematic achievement and to put into perspective The Birth of a Nation at a time -today- when white supremacists have a vivid presence in the United States and on an international level. Meanwhile, resistance from the afro-american community is getting stronger.
